Instruction No 1 4.16 [1980 New] Damages--Libel or Slander--Plaintiff a Public Official or Public Figure If you find the issues in favor of plaintiff, then you must award plaintiff such sum as you believe will fairly and justly compensate plaintiff for any damages you believe he sustained [and is reasonably certain to sustain in the future] as a direct result of the (describe the publication such as "publishing of the newspaper article", "making of the statement", etc.) mentioned in the evidence. In addition to any damages to which you find plaintiff entitled under the foregoing paragraph, you may award plaintiff an additional amount as punitive damages in such sum as you believe will serve to punish defendant and to deter him and others from like conduct.
